What Makes HECC Different From a Local Sports Hall?

If you have ever practised cricket in a school sports hall or a general leisure centre, you will know it is not quite the same as playing on a pitch. The floor might be too bouncy, the ceiling might be too low, and there is often another sport going on right next to you. So what actually makes a dedicated Essex cricket centre different, and why does it matter for your game?

At HECC, we are not a shared sports hall that happens to fit in a cricket net once a week. We are a purpose-built, dedicated cricket facility, and that difference shapes everything from the floor beneath your feet to the coaching you receive.

Built for cricket, not just borrowed for it

A general sports hall is designed to host badminton, five-a-side football, netball and dozens of other activities. Cricket is usually squeezed in as an afterthought, with a net rigged up between basketball hoops on a floor built for trainers, not batting pads.

Our indoor net hire space is different. The flooring uses ECB specialist matting with shock absorbers underneath, so the ball behaves the way it would outdoors on a good pitch, with a true and predictable bounce. The lanes are wide enough for a full range of shots, and the run-ups stretch to twenty metres, giving bowlers proper room to build rhythm rather than pulling up short because the wall is too close.

Lighting matters too. Multi-sport halls are usually lit for general visibility, not for tracking a hard ball at pace. Our lighting is set up specifically so players can pick up the ball early, which is a small detail that makes a big difference to both batting and bowling practice.

The table below sums up the main differences

Feature General sports hall HECC dedicated cricket facility
Flooring Multi-purpose, not cricket specific ECB specialist flooring with shock absorbers
Run-up length Often short or shared space Twenty metre run-ups
Lighting General purpose Designed for tracking a cricket ball
Coaching on site Rarely available ECB qualified coaches every session
Equipment Bring your own Bola bowling machines with auto feeder
Pathway beyond one session None Structured academy pathway from age six upwards

Coaching that goes beyond a booked slot

Hiring a badminton court gets you a court and nothing else. At HECC, every lane comes with access to a team of ECB qualified coaches who understand cricket technique inside and out, not generic sports centre staff covering multiple activities at once.

This matters whether you are booking a one-off session or looking for something more structured. You can find out more about our one-to-one and small group cricket coaching if you want focused, personalised sessions built around your own game. Coaches here are working towards recognised qualifications through bodies such as the England and Wales Cricket Board, whose coaching courses set the national standard for cricket coach education. That is a level of expertise you simply will not find at a local sports hall.

A clear pathway, not just a one-off booking

Perhaps the biggest difference is what happens after your first visit. A sports hall gives you a court for an hour, then you go home with no follow-up plan. HECC is built around a proper development squad and academy pathway, taking players from their very first steps in the game right through to serious, competitive cricket.

Whether a young player is just starting out at six years old or working towards representative honours as a teenager, there is a clear next step waiting for them, with coaches who already know their game and their progress so far. That continuity, session after session and year after year, is something a general leisure centre was never designed to offer.

Why this matters for your progress

Cricket is a technical sport. Small details in bounce, run-up length, lighting and coaching quality all add up over time. Practising in the wrong environment will not ruin your game overnight, but it will slow your progress compared with training somewhere purpose-built for the sport.
