HECC Cricket's coaches break down the right age to start and what to expect at every stage. - Published: 2026-04-27 - Modified: 2026-04-27 - URL: https://www.heccsport.com/2026/04/27/child-cricket-coaching-guide/ One of the most common questions coaches at HECC Cricket hear from parents is: "Is my child too young? Or have they left it too late? " The honest answer is that there is no single perfect age. Children develop at different rates, and the most important thing is finding the right programme for where your child is right now. That said, there are real differences in what younger and older children can get out of coaching. What Children Can Learn at Each Stage Ages 5 to 7 are all about fun and movement. Children at this stage are still developing basic coordination and balance, so sessions focus on soft ball games, simple throwing and catching, and building a love of sport. There are no complicated drills, just a positive introduction to cricket. Ages 8 to 11 is where structured coaching really begins. Children can handle more detailed technical work across batting, bowling, and fielding, and they are ready to be introduced to hardball cricket. This is often the ideal time to join a junior cricket programme. The NHS recommends that children aged 5 to 18 get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and regular coaching sessions are a great way to build that habit. Ages 12 and above brings a sharper focus on technique, game awareness, and preparation for competitive and representative cricket. Children who start at this age can still progress quickly, especially with specialist coaching behind them. Age Stage Focus 5 to 7 FUNdamental... --- > Rain, cold and short evenings do not have to stop your cricket. Here are 5 reasons players across Essex and Hertfordshire train at HECC all year. - Published: 2026-04-23 - Modified: 2026-04-27 - URL: https://www.heccsport.com/2026/04/23/essex-hertfordshire-cricketers-train-indoors/ A lot of people think cricket stops when summer ends. The pitches go quiet, the whites get packed away, and players wait around until April hoping the weather turns. But that is not how serious cricketers think about it, and it is not how the best players at club level develop their game. At the Herts and Essex Cricket Centre (HECC) in Sawbridgeworth, players of all ages and abilities train right through autumn and winter. Some come to fix a specific technical problem. Some want to stay sharp ahead of the new season. Others just want to keep playing because they genuinely love the game and do not see why the calendar should stop them. If you play cricket anywhere across Essex or Hertfordshire, here are five very good reasons why training indoors all year round is worth taking seriously. 1. The Weather Never Gets in the Way Let us be honest about the British weather. It rains. It gets dark before 5pm. Pitches get waterlogged, nets get sodden, and outdoor sessions get cancelled at short notice just when you were actually looking forward to them. Indoor training removes that problem completely. At HECC, the nets are available whether it is raining, cold, or pitch dark outside. There is no checking the weather app the night before. You book a lane, you turn up, you practise. That reliability is something you simply cannot get from outdoor facilities between October and March. This matters more than people realise. Players who keep... --- > From ages 6 to 18 and beyond, HECC Cricket offers structured cricket coaching in Essex and Hertfordshire. Here is how the pathway works, step by step. - Published: 2026-04-13 - Modified: 2026-04-27 - URL: https://www.heccsport.com/2026/04/13/beginner-club-cricketer-pathway/ If your child has just started showing an interest in cricket, you might be wondering where they begin and where they could end up. At HECC Cricket in Sawbridgeworth, there is a clear, step-by-step route that takes young players from their very first session all the way to competitive adult cricket. Every stage builds on the last, and every coach holds an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) qualification. You can learn more about what that involves on the ECB's Coach Education page. The Pathway at a Glance Programme Age Group Focus Junior Development Squad Ages 6 to 11 Fundamentals and hardball readiness Junior Academy Ages 8 to 11 Accelerated skill development Senior Development Squad Ages 12 to 14 Independence and competitive cricket Emerging Academy Ages 11 to 13 Invitation-only, high-intensity training Senior Academy Ages 14 and above Player-led learning and match preparation Junior Development Squad (Ages 6 to 11) This is where most young cricketers start. The Junior Development Squad runs across three terms in 55-minute sessions, split into three levels by age. JDS1 (ages 6 to 7) covers athletic basics and fun cricket games. JDS2 (ages 8 to 9) introduces hardball cricket and more detailed technique work. JDS3 (ages 10 to 11) adds indoor and outdoor matchplay to build tactical awareness and teamwork. Throughout all three levels, life skills such as discipline, patience, and confidence are woven into every session. Junior Academy (Ages 8 to 11) The Junior Academy runs alongside the JDS for players who are progressing... --- > Booked a cricket net hire near you? Here are 7 practical ways to get more out of every session at HECC Cricket in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. - Published: 2026-04-09 - Modified: 2026-04-27 - URL: https://www.heccsport.com/2026/04/09/indoor-cricket-net-hire-session/ Most players turn up to an indoor net, pick up a bat, and spend the whole hour just slogging away at balls. There is nothing wrong with enjoying your time in the nets, but if you want to actually improve, you need a bit of a plan. At HECC Cricket in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, our indoor net hire sessions give you access to a specialist cricket training facility all year round. The facility is open seven days a week, and you can book a lane on its own or add a bowling machine to your session. Here are seven practical tips to help you get far more out of every net session you book. 1. Set a Goal Before You Arrive Turning up without a focus means you will probably just repeat the same habits you already have. Before your session, decide what you want to work on. Keep it simple and specific. Some examples: Practise playing the ball later to improve timing Work on your trigger movement before each delivery Focus on keeping your head still when playing drives Bowl six overs targeting off stump consistently Writing your goal down in your phone before you leave the house takes about 30 seconds and can completely change the quality of your session. 2. Warm Up Properly Indoor nets are smaller spaces, but that does not mean you should skip your warm-up. A short warm-up gets your muscles ready and reduces the risk of pulling something early in the session. Spend five... --- > Wondering what a cricket academy for kids actually looks like? Here is a real look inside a weekly HECC Cricket session at our Sawbridgeworth centre. - Published: 2026-04-02 - Modified: 2026-04-27 - URL: https://www.heccsport.com/2026/04/02/hecc-cricket-academy-session/ If you are thinking about signing your child up for a cricket academy, you probably have a lot of questions. What will they actually do in each session? How do the coaches teach? Will it suit my child's age and ability? And is it worth the commitment? This post answers all of that. We have put together a plain, honest walk-through of what a typical week looks like across HECC Cricket's junior programmes in Sawbridgeworth. Whether your child is just starting out or has been playing for a few years, here is what you can expect. Who Is This For? HECC Cricket runs structured programmes for young players across a wide age range. The three main junior options are: Junior Development Squad (ages 6-11) for beginners building their first cricket skills Junior Academy (ages 8-11) for players who are ready to develop more specific batting, bowling, and fielding technique Emerging Academy (ages 11-13) for committed, motivated players who want a more intensive environment Each programme runs across three terms through the year, inside HECC's specialist indoor facility at Tharbies Farm, Sawbridgeworth. A Session Is Not Just Nets One of the biggest things parents get wrong is assuming a cricket academy is just kids taking turns hitting balls in nets. It is much more structured than that. Each session is planned around specific skills and age-appropriate goals. Coaches use a range of activities, not just net practice, to help players improve across all three disciplines: batting, bowling, and fielding. Here is... --- ---
